About Dental Crowns
A dental crown is a tooth-shaped cap that fits over a tooth to restore chips or cracks. They can also be used for discolored teeth. The crown is cemented over the designated tooth and is designed to match the color and shape of your other teeth for a natural look.
This option is ideal for patients with a tooth that is severely damaged and doesn’t have enough room to hold a filling. Crowns can also be used to attach bridges or prevent a tooth from breaking.
Benefits of Dental Crowns
Dental crowns are made from an extremely durable material, so they can last for many years. Dental crowns can:
- Protect a tooth from further damage
- Protect a tooth after a root canal
- Support a damaged tooth
- Hold a cracked or broken tooth together
- Be used to attach a bridge
- Improve the appearance of a discolored tooth
Getting a Dental Crown
During your consultation, Dr. Oji will evaluate the condition of your teeth and mouth. We will take X-rays of your mouth, as well as any impressions that are needed for your treatment. Typically, local anesthesia is administered to the area where your crown will be placed to ensure you are comfortable. We offer local anesthesia and nitrous oxide, which you can read about on our anesthesia options page.
Your tooth will be contoured to make room for the crown. An impression of the contoured tooth will be taken, and you will be given a temporary crown to wear while your permanent one is being made. When it is ready, you will return to our office and Dr. Oji will place your permanent, custom-made crown.
