Mouth Guards

Mouth Guards Protect Your Smile

Also referred to as sports guards or mouth protectors, mouth guards protect your teeth from blows to the mouth or face. They are an important piece of athletic equipment for anyone involved in any physical activity that could result in an injury to the mouth. They typically cover the upper teeth and are designed to protect your teeth from chipping or breaking, as well as cuts to your lips or other injuries to your mouth. If you wear braces or other oral appliances, a mouth guard is especially important to protect them from damage.

Do I Need a Mouth Guard?

If you are involved in any activity that involves the possibility of receiving an injury to your mouth, you should wear a mouth guard. This includes

  • Football
  • Basketball
  • Baseball
  • Soccer
  • Hockey
  • Gymnastics
  • Mountain biking
  • Skateboarding or rollerblading
  • Boxing or wrestling
  • Any other sport that could result in an injury to the face

Mouth guards are custom-made by your dentist to fit comfortably in your mouth. Ideally, they should be replaced after each season because they wear down over time. Children and teens should replace their mouth guards regularly because their mouths are still developing. Many athletes receive a new mouth guard when they attend their routine check-ups with their dentist.
