Why X-Rays and Digital Imaging
Dental X-rays are typically performed yearly or during your initial consultation visit. They are detailed images of your teeth that your dentist uses to evaluate your oral health. X-rays are taken with low levels of radiation and can help your dentist identify problems such as cavities, misalignment, tooth decay, or impacted teeth. Digital imaging uses advanced technology to take detailed, 3D scans without using radiation. These are useful when creating impressions for orthodontic or restorative work and for tracking orofacial development.
Children require more frequent imaging than adults. X-rays and imaging can help determine if baby teeth need to be pulled to prevent complications, help predict future dental needs, and more.
Digital impressions with iTero®
Digital scanners take more detailed 3D images of your teeth that specialists can view from virtually any angle. Our office uses the advanced iTero intraoral scanner to take 3D impressions of your teeth. This system provides analytics of your teeth, such as teeth width and overbite measurements. We can send the digital impressions to labs to construct restorative products, such as crowns, bridges, abutments, or veneers.
iTero is a handheld device that our surgical assistant will use to scan your mouth. Within 60 seconds, the device creates a digital 3D impression of your teeth and gums. No dental putty, no mess, and no discomfort! These images are incredibly detailed, allowing us to treat with precision and produce predictable results. iTero offers many benefits that both doctors and patients can enjoy:
- Radiation-free technology
- Faster appointments
- Streamlines the process of taking dental impressions
- A full-arch scan is completed in as little as 60 seconds
What do X-rays and digital scans show?
Many diseases and oral health complications can be spotted by your dentist. However, some conditions cannot be seen without the use of a closer, more scientific look. X-rays can reveal:
- Bone infections
- Periodontal disease
- Areas of decay between the teeth or below fillings
- Cysts or abscesses
- Developmental concerns
- Tumors
